Why the colour is never even

People sometimes ask whether a patch of darker tone is a flaw. It isn’t. It’s the most honest part of the piece.
I build colour in thin layers of mineral pigment, rubbing some back and letting some settle into the low places. Cement takes it differently every time, depending on the day, the humidity and how long the layer has rested.
A uniform colour would be easy to make. It would also look like it came from a factory. The uneven tone is what lets a surface change with the light through the day.
